Dr. Julia Torres, LCSW #518
Helping families, and children in particular, has always been the best fit for me. Throughout my career, I have worked with a range of people. My first job was working with disabled individuals, helping them to learn life skills and accomplish every day activities like grocery shopping. While I loved that job, I always came back to working with children.
Children are my specialty, and it’s because I see so much hope in them. Kids have endless potential to grow and succeed, and I want to help nurture that because they are our future. As adults we can get set in our ways, but children have flexible thinking, and that’s really fun to work with.
I come from a tight-knit, Catholic Spanish family. Growing up, my parents were always concerned about our wellbeing and mental health. They understood that life is more than just the physical comforts, and they made sure that we didn’t let every inconvenience weigh us down too much. My father has always been good at seeing the cup as half full, and he taught us that any situation can be corrected, regardless of how bad it may seem. In our household, my parents were great role models as they worked for personal goals and achieving personal success. They consistently read self-improvement books, and they read them to me until, eventually, I read them on my own.
I believe that my upbringing strongly affects my everyday work. Thanks to my parent’s outlook on life, I see every day as a fresh start. Even if someone has a bad day, the next day is about resetting the clock and starting over. Forget what you’ve done, and let’s begin again. This type of thinking also allows for forgiveness, and I am able to easily forgive and help students repair broken relationships to help them move forward.
When it comes to my patients and students, I’m willing to go above and beyond what is expected of me. While I’m not a perfectionist, I make sure to do things thoroughly and correctly. I tend to stay calm in tense situations, and I’m clear headed when giving feedback in a group setting. I am solution-focused, kind and people enjoy being around me. I’m fun, prompt, punctual and responsive.
I’m a nonjudgmental, steady and supportive child advocate, and I hold confidentiality in high regard. I take information and try to give my patients possible alternatives to help them feel better. I’m easy to talk to, and I really try to value the client’s free will, even if they are children. Even kids have choices, and I try to help them with their individual situations.
Outside of my work with clients, I try to engage in activities that make me feel good, like Pilates, yoga and walking my three dogs. I enjoy cooking for my family, traveling and reading mystery novels. In the community, my family and I attend mass at St. Mary’s Church, my children attend catechism and my husband is a member of the Knights of Columbus.
I’m actively involved in school activities, such as parents’ night, red ribbon week, which encourages kids to be drug free, and community education seminars on bullying. I participate in the winter coat drive for underprivileged children and I try to utilize community resources to ensure every student has what they need to succeed.
I have a kind heart and am a nice person, and kids recognize that. They trust me.
My practice is open to all clients and challenges, and I’m happy that you’ve come here. I want to help you be the best person you can be, and we will move at your speed. My hope is that you feel comfortable in my office, so I’ve created a warm, inviting and relaxing space for you to unwind.
